Bob grew up in Chicago where he first became interested in magic. He
moved to Wichita in the late '40s and joined Ring 47. With a business background and audit
profession he became valuable as our treasurer and advisor while we were compiling the
club's Constitution.
He consistently baffled us with his mental chicanery and was continually
leading his victims into an abyss with his patter that stretched the authenticity of the
King's English, i.e. crackers for ducks- "quackers". Get it?
With a theatrical background he was also very useful whenever the club
produced a public show. Since he didn't particularly like to perform on stage he did enjoy
working backstage as the light and sound engineer, running the curtain or whatever needed
to be done.
During the '50s our Ring members visited other Rings in the area,
particularly the Oklahoma City club. Seymour Davis and Delora Whitney were the most active
and Delora was well known throughout the magic world since her parents were professional
magicians. Delora's presence always created lots of fun and excitement and she and her
mother had the respect of everyone. It was at one of these "mini" conventions
that Bob and Maurice Lowe did a version of the Bullet Catching Trick. Should you ask Lowe
about it he will say he doesn't remember it (probably he just can't forget it).
In recent years since Bob and Margaret retired they have volunteered
their services to the Red Cross. As Margaret was a nurse, this has worked out well as they
are sent all over the country wherever a disaster may occur. Thus, they are out of town
considerably which accounts for Bob's poor attendance at the Ring meetings. We will
forgive them for that as we know what they are doing is very worthwhile and needed very
much.
Bob was very cooperative in his capacity as various officers within the
Ring, performing each in his determined and accurate manner. He is also credited with 11
years as Kansas' Territorial Vice President. |
