In this case the duo could bill themselves as Glenda and Company since
she is the Magician and Mike is the sidekick. He is not just an assistant that carries
props on and off the stage. Mike is a ventriloquist that, with his puppets, participates
in the performance with comedy interruptions and assists Glenda with an extra hand as
needed.
They depend on comedy and music as they often perform for large groups.
Many appearances are for church organizations, fairs, festivals and schools where they
entertain young and old alike. After sixteen years in the business, Glenda and Mike feel
right at home in this profession.
Normally the novice sees a magician then gets interested in magic. In
this case, Glenda watched her grandmother do some tricks long before she saw a magician.
Glenda was also influenced by Gary Davis and his late brother, Ray, who she saw performing
at school events and festivals around the Hutchinson area. During her and Mike's active
years they have attended conventions at Colon, Michigan over 10 years and became
acquainted with many professionals including Harry Blackstone, Karrell Fox, Sid Lorraine,
and many others.
These kids are enthusiastic about magic, quality performance, stage
conduct and have a sharp opinion about the criteria many performers should work toward.
Glenda says, "It's understandable to see the amateurs error occasionally but when
more experienced performers or professionals show lack of care, it becomes
inexcusable."
The Mann's do a considerable amount of traveling so we miss them from
some Ring meetings. When they are present it's a delight to visit with them and watch them
participate in all our club's activities.
And although they live some fifty miles from our Ring, they
seldom miss a meeting. Also as Mike is computer literate, he is always ready, willing and
able to assist in any task that demands his specialized design talents. And so as this
50th Anniversary Book's deadline was overdue, Mike stepped in to leviate the burden of
others working on the project. And for this we thank him profusely; we could not have done
it otherwise. Mike made an application to join our Ring in 1999.
