Curtis’ great uncle Charlie from
Missouri had no idea that the couple of coin tricks he would perform
at a family gathering each year would cause his little nephew to be
launched into a lifelong fascination with the art of magic. Several
years later, Curtis would show up at the family gatherings and
entertain family and friends with much more than a couple of coin
tricks. By the time Curtis was in High School, he was performing
semi-professionally for birthday parties, churches, restaurants, and
business gatherings. He even performed a series of stage effects and
illusions for an evening talent show his senior year, hosted by a
local television personality. Curtis knew then that magic was not
going to be just a hobby for him, but a major part of the rest of his
life on a professional level.
After High School, Curtis joined the Army National Guard and paid his
way through college, where he studied acting and theatre production.
During his college years, he performed wherever he could and also
worked part-time for Andy Dallas at Dallas & Company Costume and Magic
Shop in Champaign, Illinois. He also had the privilege of meeting some
of his early inspirations, such as the late Albert Goshman, the
“Amazing” James Randi, and David Copperfield. He starred in a number
of productions over the years in a mixture of college and community
theatre productions. He combined his theatre experience with his magic
and formed a small, magic/comedy troupe called “Magedy” during the
late 1980’s, doing primarily shows for children that contained special
messages against alcohol or substance abuse, promoted safety, etc. He
also joined the International Brotherhood of Magicians in the Urbana,
Illinois ring, and was an active member there for a few years.
After college, Curtis became heavily involved in ministry and business
pursuits outside of magic, and did not perform for several years. His
pursuits have taken him from Illinois to California, Virginia, Alaska,
and Washington State. He moved to Wichita from Washington State in
September 2004 with his wife and their two teen-aged daughters. In
2007 he decided to return to performing magic professionally, and
became reunited with the I.B.M. and joined the Wizards of Wichita. He
now combines his business, ministry, theatre, and magic talents and
performs for various venues, including churches, restaurants, outdoor
festivals, corporate functions, private parties, and more.
