Max has been an enthusiastic performer although his time
with the Ring has been limited. He joined the Wichita Police Department as a rookie years
ago and worked the night beat most of the time. He did obtain shows occasionally and also
performed safety programs for the department.
He spent some time in the Special Services Branch of the Marine Corps, performing magic
and juggling for inductees at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and later at the San Diego,
California training center.
Over the years he has covered the Midwestern states working schools, conventions, and
industrial shows, not to mention festivals and the North Pole Vacation Stop just west of
Colorado Springs. The Wichita River Festival has become an annual event for Max and he
always fills the auditorium at Century II during the festival. He actually commutes from
Colorado just for the one show. Here and back to do the following days' appearance at the
Pole.
When Max first became interested in magic his first love was illusions. He has purchased
many effects from various professionals and, of course, built many of his illusions
himself. He pulls in a variety of artists to work with him in presenting a complete
evening program. This is one reason why he is one of the most active performers in the
area.
His assistant, Connie Little, has been with the show since 1981. She
trains other assistants each year at the North Pole and for other shows. Connie also does
the advertising work for Joe Stevens' catalogs and the Desert Magic Seminars.
A serious collector of magic literature, he has a library of over 4,000 magic titles,
including books of antiquity and many other scarce items. Through the years he has
acquired numerous pieces of rare magic -- apparatus, photographs and memorabilia. In 1990
he visited the Orient and brought back beautiful, elaborate Oriental costumes for his
show. His greatest feat of magic was getting the large, heavy cases back to Wichita
through multiple customs checks and plane changes. |
